What) The Olympic Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Montréal that was built as the main venue for the 1976 Summer Olympics. It subsequently became the home of Montréal's professional baseball and football teams. Since 2004, when the Montréal Expos relocated to Washington, D.C., the stadium has had no main tenant, and with a history of financial and structural problems, it is largely seen as a white elephant. It currently serves as a 56,000 seat multipurpose facility for special events and continues to serve as a 66,000 seat venue for playoff and Grey Cup games. La tour de Montréal, the tower incorporated into the base of the stadium, is the tallest inclined tower in the world at 574 feet.

The stadium's nickname "The Big O" is a reference to both its name and to the doughnut-shape of the permanent component of the stadium's roof.  "The Big Owe" has been used to reference the astronomical cost of the stadium and the 1976 Olympics as a whole. It is the largest stadium, by seating capacity, in Canada. (1)

Why) When I was last in Montréal about 8 years ago, I drove by Olympic Stadium on the way to somewhere else.  At the time I was almost stopped by how striking it looked but I did not know enough to pull off the street and take a walk around it.  I have regretted that choice since then and this time I made sure to stop in.

This view is from a postcard that I purchased in the stadium gift shop.

As we were walking around the building, I knew that these pictures and ...

... my words will not be able to convey to you the experience of ...

... taking in that central support tower.  It's curves made it seem both impossible and ...

... exactly right at the same time.  That is a strange combination but there are so many angles you can look at it from and ...

... the majority seemed interesting to my eye.  This is the other postcard I got from the gift shop and I liked it enough to send it to ...

... myself.  Even then I was trying to state in words how much I enjoyed the experience of the stadium.

As we were on our way back to the car, we came upon this bridge that seemed to double as an entrance gate.

As usual, I enjoyed some of the structural details the most and I especially liked the effect that I got when ...

... this truck stopped underneath the bridge.

I will close with this picture that I took somewhere on the stadium grounds.
Although I didn't ask her at the time, past experience tells me that this was probably Pam's favourite view from our walk.
