What) Max is the
City of Dryden's official mascot. He stands proudly in the
trees at the Tourist Information Centre along Highway #17. Max
was an idea of Mr. Elwin Palmer, a past president of the
Chamber of Commerce. Max was born in 1962 and celebrates his
birthday officially on July 19th. He stands 18 feet tall,
weighs 9 tons and is made of mesh, steel rods, concrete and a
layer of lacquer - to protect him from the brutal Northern
Ontario winters. Although Max is a quiet, friendly and honest
moose, has had his share of troubles, especially around
Halloween. Max was even shot once, but he recovered and is in
fine form today. (1)
Where) Next to the tourist information center on Highway 17/Trans-Canada Highway
Why) I grew
up in Moose Jaw which is also the home of Mac the Moose (born in
1984). Given the similarities in name, it seems possible that
Mac could be a cheap copy of Max. I decided to hope Mac
was a big improvement on Max but whatever the case I wanted to
see Max and judge for myself. Sadly, the directions
above were not clear enough for me so I have to rely on the
internet to render a verdict.
