What) The Astoria-Megler Bridge is a continuous truss bridge that spans the mouth of the Columbia River between Astoria, Oregon and Point Ellice near Megler, Washington. The span was the last segment of U.S. Route 101 between Olympia, Washington and Los Angeles, California. At 21,474 ft (6,545 m), it is the longest continuous truss bridge in North America.

Width: 28 ft   Height: 400 ft   Longest span: 1,232 ft   Clearance: 196 ft at high tide   Opened: August 27, 1966 (1)

Why) Pam grew up in Trail, British Columbia and she spent many days playing in and around the Columbia River.  Despite this early interest, Pam had never seen the spot where the Columbia flows into the Pacific Ocean.  It turned out to be a very powerful experience for her and this was definitely Pam's favourite Buckys on the whole trip.

That's the main part of the bridge coming up.

Here we are at the highest point.

The entire length of the Astoria-Megler Bridge can be seen in this picture but ...

... I prefer this picture that includes more of the Columbia River or ...

... this picture that looks out towards the Pacific Ocean but especially ...

... this picture which is one of my favourites from the trip.  I took it out of a moving car window so it is really in the Buckys spirit.
